In this cover reinterpretation, I took inspiration from Försök att förstå (original title Patchwork Summer) by Kristi D. Holl, a contemporary young adult novel about 13-year-old Randi and the void that arises when a parent abruptly abandons the family – only to later return without explanation. The story explores the burden of responsibility placed on a child and feelings of betrayal, anger and confusion. The cover is designed to resemble a personal diary page, using doodles, hand-drawn elements and cut-out lettering to reflect Randi’s inner voice and her attempt to process what has happened. The intentionally raw expression is meant to enhance the sense of something private, unfiltered and emotionally close.
