Book design

Books designed to be read – and kept

A well-designed book invites you in, guides your eye, sets the mood and makes reading feel effortless. My work spans everything from layout and typography to materials and print production – always with the goal of creating books that you want to leave out on the table.

Why book design matters

Books are physical experiences as much as they are stories. The design shapes how a reader feels before even turning the first page.

Good design gives space to the words, supports the text and creates a visual rhythm that carries the story forward. It also gives each publication a distinct identity – something that feels right for both the content and the reader.

I like to collaborate with publishers, editors and authors throughout the process to find that balance between form and feeling. The result is books people want to hold, read and keep.

How I work

Every project begins with understanding the story behind the book – its tone, audience and purpose. From there, I create sample pages and a visual concept that supports the content and sets the direction for the full design. I can also assist with communication with the printer and the choice of materials and finishes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Book design

What does the book design process look like?

The process includes structure, typography, layout and overall visual concept. We work iteratively with sketches and test spreads before finalising the design and moving into production.

At what stage of a book project should a designer be involved?

It depends on the project. Often the manuscript is already largely or fully completed, for example when working on a cover. At the same time, involving a designer earlier can be beneficial, especially for interior layout, structure and overall coherence. I adapt my work to the stage your project is in.

Do you work with both covers and interior layout?

Yes. I design both covers and interiors and consider them parts of the same whole.

Do you handle print production and print-ready files?

Yes. I have experience with print production and can take responsibility for print-ready files, communication with printers and quality control before print.

Do you work with both publishers and self-publishing authors?

Yes. I work with both established publishers and self-publishers, adapting the process to the organisation and level of experience.
